Project Update: Formal Cancellation of Aetherroom

Published

An Update on AetherRoom
Our goal is to provide the best possible tools for creativity and storytelling, and after reviewing our long-term product roadmap, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel AetherRoom.

AetherRoom was an in-development chatbot project. Its scope was massive, and the development and engineering resources it required slowed down progress on NovelAI.

Why We’re Making This Decision
Decisions like this are never easy, especially given the passion and effort our team poured into AetherRoom’s vision.

Unlike NovelAI, which launched as an alpha and grew through iterative development, AetherRoom was designed to be a complete product from Day One. That ambition is part of what made the initial release such a heavy lift.

The care we put into AetherRoom worked against us in some ways. Every feature opened the door to more features, and in trying to avoid post-launch disruption, its scope grew beyond what was sustainable.

After significant investment without the results we hoped for, we’ve decided to concentrate our energy on our core product, the experience that matters most to our community.

What Happens Now
Fortunately, the work we did for AetherRoom isn’t going to waste. The datasets we built for it are actively powering NovelAI today, contributing to the quality of our text generation models and the experiences we’re building. The technical knowledge our team gained, from architecture decisions to model training insights, has carried over directly into NovelAI’s development. In a real sense, every NovelAI user is already benefiting from what AetherRoom became.

And now all of our energy is going into NovelAI and it’s paying off. We’ve been shipping new updates and features like 3D Canvas, Prompt Chunks, NAI Scripting and our latest text generation model Xialong, while steadily raising the bar across the platform. NovelAI keeps getting better, our community continues to grow, engagement is up, and we’re just getting started.

To everyone who followed AetherRoom’s development and shared their excitement with us: thank you. Your enthusiasm continues to drive us to push what AI can do for writers and creators.

We’re excited to show you what’s next for NovelAI.
